I know by the time I was in law school in the 90s, the academic culture was so established it was as if it had always been.Managing Partnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05130017520583425490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5164886390834386622.post-21401977099438355172011-08-09T07:13:51.094-07:002011-08-09T07:13:51.094-07:00http://balkin.blogspot.com/2010/06/wake-up-fellow-...http://balkin.blogspot.com/2010/06/wake-up-fellow-law-professors-to.html

On June 13, 2010, Professor Brian Tamanaha wrote the following on Balkinization:

"More crucially, law schools must shrink the number of graduates, and must hold the line on tuition increases. (The fact that many students get scholarships is no answer because it simply means that some students, those paying full fare—often the students with the worst prospects—are subsidizing others.) This will be painful: smaller raises (perhaps even salary reductions), smaller administrations, smaller faculties, more teaching, less money for research, travel, and conferences.

The longer law schools delay in undertaking these measures, the more casualties there will be. At some point, law professors can no longer disclaim responsibility for the harmful consequences of this enterprise. (These comments are not meant to point fingers at others—I too want to earn as much as I can, with lots of time for research, knowing that this is paid for by students.)"

It is crazy to charge law students $35K-$47K per year in tuition, so that their instructors can engage in writing articles that will appear in obscure law reviews. The fact is that few people bother to read these articles. The content is not screened out or reviewed by academic and professional peers, which is the case with medical journals.

This is outdated. Who really benefits by a teacher who writes an 62 page law review article on the agricultural effects of bee pollen?!?! Other than the professor, of course.Nandohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06423524039657355134noreply@blogger.com
