In 2007, I was discussing with a younger colleague in Washington DC, why I felt they shouldn't attend law school unless they went to a top school and were near the top of the class.

I recall saying that it seemed as if everyone under 35 who didn't know what to do with their lives, was in law school. And then they came out with a massive debt, no real job, doing temp doc review work. Even then, you could read of cases like that ...

I am not a lawyer and never considered law school for myself. I do not think I am especially brilliant. But even then, anyone who was doing a bit of reading, paying attention, who had any contact with even a handful of lawyers or law school grads, could see the problem.

It wasn't necessary to do intensive due diligence. Or to be thinking of going to law school yourself. The evidence was all around.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5164886390834386622.post-80949710722499314732012-12-16T06:26:39.610-08:002012-12-16T06:26:39.610-08:00Columbia Law School. You listed some ...Er, 9:50 above, what a sad fail.

You listed some other jobs. But are any better than a 50% chance of obtaining?

Remember, law school - a semi-decent law school - gives you a guaranteed 50%+ chance of getting a law job, and far higher the higher you go in the rankings.

Your job alternatives don't seem to easy to obtain.

For example, you listed:

PR rep (maybe 5%)
TV assistant producer (maybe 1%)
New media/advertising (maybe 25%)
Dancer (1%?)
Underwater archeology (5%)
Geologist (25%?)
Traveling nurse (50% - equivalent to law school, but with blood and piss and shit)
Accountant (75%, but more boring than law)
Bartender at upscale Manhattan club (25%, 75% if you want to be a downscale bartender)
Nutritionist (50%?)
Ecologist (5%)
Game design/tester (a/k/a victim of "game testing" scam, 25%)
Model (still in school) (0.0001%)
Real estate developer in family business (100%, but family must own business, so 0%)
Shipping (some greek thing) (0% - see above)
Museum staff at major NYC museum (poor but happy) (5%)
Teacher for kids with learning disabilities (50%, but really?)
Social worker (50%, again, better than law?)
Probation officer of some kind (no chance, it's a government job. 0% unless you're a veteran)
Therapist (meh, 5% earning money, 75% if you want to use a spare bedroom to massage people for minimum wage)

So yes, you listed lots of other professions. You missed out astronaut, spy, veterinarian, international playboy, porn star, and other "dream" careers.

But you did list lots of careers that have less chance of success than law.

Model? Really? You think that seeking a career in modelling is better than law?

Fuck, some of you guys just don't get it.

Law school is a shitty, expensive deal right now. (Remember that I said that before you trash me in followup comments; I think law school is a bad deal). But compared to other options, is it really that bad right now?

What else could you do RIGHT NOW that has a more solid, proven success rate of 50% or more?

I didn't ask what other careers you could shoot for. I asked what other careers offer a better chance of success than law, right now, in this economy.

Where are these super-stable, well-paid jobs that require no education?

Whore in the ND oil fields? Hmm, perhaps. But you need special equipment that only 50% of us have.

Any other suggestions?

I'm not saying that law is a good fucking option. I'm merely asking for what the good options are these days.

What would be a better gamble right now?

And back it up with stats. Because even the shittiest law school stats are maybe 10%, 20% off. So back up your dream career choice with some stats, and we'll compare dick lengths.

Law school, a good law school at least, still swing a big one relative to the alternatives.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5164886390834386622.post-74371943510596176382012-12-15T15:36:08.364-08:002012-12-15T15:36:08.364-08:00The Harvard Law degree is useless if it does not l...The Harvard Law degree is useless if it does not land you a well paying job at age 45, 55 or 60 and you need the job to support yourself and your family. Sure, it is great to walk those hallowed halls and tell people you go to Harvard Law when you are young. The glory fades fast if that degree does not provide you a reliable job later in life. You become a failure from Harvard Law. My cousin's son had his goals set on applying to law school next year. All he has been talking about since high school is becoming a lawyer. After showing him the stats, the lies, the dishonesty, explaining what caveat emptor means and how the law school business is exempt from consumer protection laws, he doesn't want to be a lawyer anymore. Hearing him say it and witnessing him realizing that law school is a scam made me proud of the kid. I was almost moved to tears.
